Business & work

For building a company, joining an employer or putting your own expertise to work. Select a route to see the details.

InvestorStart, buy or run a Mauritian company

USD 100,000 initial investment · 10 years, renewable. We review the proposed activity, funding and sector approvals alongside the permit requirements.

The business must also meet ongoing turnover conditions: at least MUR 5 million annually from year three, increasing to MUR 8 million from year five for renewal. The permit threshold should be considered alongside the capital your business actually needs.

ProfessionalTake up employment with a Mauritian employer

MUR 50,000 minimum basic monthly salary. The employer submits the application. The permit follows the employment contract, for a maximum of ten years.

We help coordinate the applicant and employer documents, check the proposed role and identify any professional registration or sector clearance needed.

Self-EmployedOperate independently in the services sector

USD 50,000 initial transfer · 10 years, renewable. This route requires a credible independent activity, with evidence of potential clients, including local clients.

Ongoing business income requirements apply: at least MUR 2 million annually from year three, with MUR 3 million annually from year five for renewal. We review the client base and business plan before the application is prepared.

InnovatorDevelop an eligible innovation-led project

No prescribed minimum investment · 10 years, renewable. Your project must follow the applicable EDB assessment route or registration with an accredited incubator.

Research and development, a credible business plan and progress reporting matter. A minimum viable product is expected by the end of year five. We help clarify the assessment and evidence your particular project will need.

Lifestyle & residence

For making Mauritius your home, retiring here or experiencing island life before committing.

Property OwnerResidence through a qualifying property purchase

Qualifying purchase from USD 375,000. The property must fall within an eligible scheme or category. The qualifying residence is linked to continued ownership.

We help you establish the residence implications before you commit to a purchase. The threshold does not mean every property qualifies or that the full acquisition cost is limited to that amount. Work rights and family eligibility should be checked for the specific permit.

Retired Non-CitizenMake Mauritius home from age 50

USD 2,000 monthly or USD 24,000 annually · 10 years, renewable. Applicants must be at least 50 and meet the evidence-of-funds and foreign-transfer conditions.

The current guidelines require evidence of USD 24,000 available funds and an initial USD 2,000 transfer within 60 days of permit issuance, followed by the required monthly or annual transfers. Taking up employment requires the appropriate work authorisation.

Premium VisaA longer stay, with income earned overseas

One year, renewable. A route for a longer stay while your main business or income remains outside Mauritius, without entering the Mauritian labour market.

Your plans, financial means, accommodation and travel and health insurance form part of the assessment. The published checklist requests three months of recent bank statements and proof of monthly income, alongside travel and family documents where applicable.

The government Premium Visa application is free. Any agreed Journey Giants professional fee is separate. We help you consider whether this longer-stay route fits your plans; renewal and admission remain subject to the authorities' assessment.

Looking further ahead

A pathway to long-term residence.

The 20-year Permanent Residence Permit can be a later step for qualifying permit holders. The standard pathways below depend on the relevant permit history and a qualifying five-year record immediately before application.

Investor

At least five years as an Investor OP holder, with MUR 15 million annual turnover for five years, or MUR 75 million aggregate turnover over that period.

Professional

At least five years on a Professional OP or valid work permit, with a MUR 400,000 minimum basic monthly salary for five consecutive years.

Self-Employed

At least five years as a Self-Employed OP holder, with MUR 3 million annual business income for five years, or MUR 15 million aggregate turnover over that period.

Retired Non-Citizen

At least five years on the retired residence permit, with USD 200,000 transferred in total over the five consecutive years before application.

Qualification is assessed, not automatic. Professional and Self-Employed applicants have a six-month filing window after satisfying the criteria. We check your record and the applicable timing before preparing a file.
From the first conversation

How we handle your application.

One clear process, from identifying the right route through to the formalities that complete your application.

  1. Identify the right route

We review your age, intended activity, income source, family position and timing. If a route does not fit, we explain why before you commit to it.

  2. Prepare and submit

We organise the checklist, supporting documents and application so your file is complete and consistent. You know what is needed and what remains outstanding.

  3. Complete the formalities

We guide you through the relevant approval, banking, transfers, medical requirements, appointments and permit collection, with a clear sequence for your route.

We provide a route-specific timing estimate. Completion depends on a full file, official assessment and the required formalities; approval and processing times cannot be guaranteed.

Our work spans trade, logistics and advisory services. We consider the commercial realities alongside the application requirements.

We distinguish thresholds from real costs

A regulatory minimum is only the beginning. We consider licensing, capital needs and the practical costs of your plans.

We give you a straight answer

If the proposed route is unsuitable or your file is not ready, we identify the issue and explain what needs attention before submission.

After the permit

Banking

Account-opening preparation, coordination of know-your-customer documents and appropriate introductions.

Company formation

Incorporation, licensing and coordination of statutory and tax requirements with the relevant professionals.

Permit Health Check

An annual review of the evidence and financial history needed to maintain your permit and prepare for renewal.

Family and renewals

Support with dependant applications, changes of circumstance and preparation ahead of renewal deadlines.

Plan for your family, too.

Eligible spouses, qualifying parents and unmarried dependent children within the applicable age limit may be able to accompany you. We review each person's position alongside the main application.

Family, work rights and continuing compliance
  • Work rights: a dependant residence permit does not automatically authorise employment. The appropriate work authorisation is assessed separately.
  • Changes: a new address, employer, salary, activity or family circumstance may trigger reporting or a fresh application.
  • Records: turnover, salary, transfers and supporting filings should be monitored before a renewal becomes urgent.
  • Timing: dependant permits and renewals need to be coordinated with the main permit's validity.

Applicable application, permit and dependant charges are checked for your route. The Premium Visa has no government application or visa fee.

Project and licensing costs

Additional capital, licences, guarantees, premises and other requirements for the business or property involved.

Completion and relocation

Medical checks, translations, banking, due diligence and the practical costs of establishing yourself in Mauritius.

Applicable official charges and Journey Giants' professional fee are confirmed in writing after we review your proposed route and the people applying.
Before you begin

Essential questions.

Straight answers to the questions most people ask before taking the next step.

Which permit do I need?

It depends on your age, intended activity, income source and who is accompanying you. We begin with your plans, then identify the route and the evidence needed to support it.

Can I begin from outside Mauritius?

Yes. Many applications, including Occupation Permits and retired residence permits, begin online. Some completion steps, such as original-document checks, medicals and identification, take place in Mauritius. We explain the sequence before you arrange travel.

How long does the process take?

We give you an estimate for your route and circumstances. Document readiness, requests for further information and official assessment affect the timeline. A published processing period is indicative, not a guaranteed completion date.

Can my family accompany me?

Eligible dependants may apply for linked residence, subject to the rules for the main permit and each family member. Tell us who is coming with you at the beginning so we can plan the applications together.

Can I work in Mauritius if I hold a Residence Permit?

It depends on your permit category and the work you intend to do. Some residence permit holders can work without a separate permit. Others may be eligible to apply for a Work Permit or Occupation Permit, or change their permit category, before starting work.

Journey Giants can review your circumstances, explain the available options and assist with the application where required.

What happens after my permit is issued?

We can continue supporting banking, company formation, compliance, dependants and renewals. We agree the scope with you, so you receive the support relevant to your circumstances.

Official guidance & information review

Criteria reviewed on 3 October 2026 against Economic Development Board guidance, with Premium Visa and general entry information also checked against the Passport and Immigration Office's published guidance. This page provides general information; eligibility, work rights, fees and administrative requirements should be confirmed for your case before filing. The authorities determine applications.

Begin with one conversation

Start with three questions.

You do not need to know the permit name to get in touch.

  1. How old are you?
  2. What will you do in Mauritius?
  3. Who is coming with you?

That is enough for us to begin identifying a suitable route and the points that need a closer look. Tell us about your plans and we will help clarify the next step.
